marches: equal parts melody & energy music player

Formed in 2009, the music of Marches reflects several musical influences including Albert Ayler & Sun Ra, as well as the lifestyle on the west coast where we're surrounded by natural beauty.

I've gone with a lineup that provides a thick sound - two saxophones, organ, bass and drums. In the group I'm playing alto & tenor saxophones and am joined by these core members: Cory Wright on tenor & baritone saxophones, Gene Baker on organ and Jordan Glenn on drums. All three of these fellows bring a distinctly positive energy to the music of Marches.

We've begun playing locally in Oakland and San Francisco, and we'll be recording an album this spring.

Cory Wright has been involved in both the jazz and creative music worlds for the past 20 years, including time spent in New York, Los Angeles and his current home in the San Francisco bay area. His recent projects reflect his interest in blurring the distinction between composed and improvised material and in combining the harmonious with the atonal, and groove with the arrhythmic. A multi-reed instrumentalist, Cory has played in ensembles lead by Anthony Braxton, Vinny Golia, Eddie Gale, Adam Rudolph and Yusef Lateef. He is currently a member of bay area groups Marches, Randy McKean's Bristle, Wiener Kids!, Lisa Mezzacappa's Nightshade, Daniel Popsicle, and the Oakland Active Orchestra.

Gene V Baker was conceived in the womb of traveling musicians madly in love.  Some of his greater moments include playing TRUMPET in empty concert hall with cecil taylor, marco eneidi, and sam ospovat for 45 minutes, studying composition with India Cooke and Alvin Curran, driving Joelle Leandre and William Winant to airports, leading the R&B FREEJAZZ GOSPEL SUPREME EIGHTY, playing the hammond organ, inventing and tuning a 17-note microtonal temperament for piano "CHANCEY", fixing, collecting, and giving away antique typewriters, writing thousands of pages of poetry ramblings that is never read, conversing with autistic genius DAVID MAVITY for hours, and finally driving his golf-cart-hammond-organ hybrid (formerly A100) to KIDS and HEARTS gigs screaming, "IT MUST BEFOUND!!!!!!!"   GENE also is devoted to the collective pursuit of consciousness and perfect irreversible economic meltdown.

Jordan Glenn
is a drummer/percussionist/composer living in Oakland. Since relocating from Eugene OR in 2006, he has been lucky enough to work with Fred Frith, William Winant, Zeena Parkins, and Roscoe Mitchell. He leads the eccentric trio Wiener Kids (Aram Shelton-alto/bass clarinet, Cory Wright-bari/clarinet) and is a member of the collective Host Family with Andrew Conklin, Karl Evangelista and Jason Hoopes. An active teacher and performer, he performs frequently with Dominique Leone, Michael Coleman, Alee Karim, and the bands Jack ‘O The Clock, Efft, and The R+B Free Jazz Gospel Supreme 80.
